Ear 834p Manual
A few months ago, I got myself an EAR 834P w/ the volume pot. The (3) tubes are stock & bear the logo of EAR. The spartan manual states that the (3) tubes are 12AX7s. I want to tube roll, so I have some NOS Matsushita 12AX7s.
EAR 834P First impressions. I had thought that I was getting a second hand unit but in fact got a new unit that had been on display. As seen in the. Phonostages; EAR 834P. Ultra-compact high performing valve phonostage. Its simple and versatile design allows for easy setup with stunning performance.
Moving Magnet capable as standard with Moving coil step-up optional. Available in black or chrome facia. Three ECC83 Valves (13D16) Moving Magnet Standard Moving Coil Optional Volume/Gain control option Standard Black or Deluxe Chrome Facia • EAR 88PB Full featured dedicated phonostage with two inputs catering for the vinyl enthusiast with multiple turntables or arms. With both Moving coil and moving magnet capability as standard, its designed to handle a wide range of cartridges. Four PCC88 Valves Moving Magnet/Moving Coil Volume/Gain control Chrome Facia with gold or chrome knobs • EAR 324 One of the few transistor based design's of Tim de Paravicini, the EAR 324 is a high grade phonostage worthy to be in the EAR lineup.
For the love of me I could not choose between them. They both sounded wonderful. I was truly stumped.
Taking advantage of them could be as simple as purchasing a balanced tonearm lead providing the single ended outputs on the phono stage can be used in conjunction with the balanced inputs or your pre or integrated has balanced inputs. The one thing that I would strongly recommend (as the owner of a fully balanced phono stage) you look into, especially when you upgrade to the lower output Grado, is using the balanced inputs on the Project. Not only would the 56 dB gain setting using the balanced inputs be ideal (using the balanced in with your MM would be less than ideal IMO but you did not seem to have an issue with even more gain than they would provide when you were using the 50 dB gain setting), chances are the phono stage would provide even better performance than you're experiencing now. The only thing that is not clear to me from the Project literature is whether the balanced inputs can be used with the single ended outputs on the RS or whether they can only be used with the balanced outputs. If the latter is the case, that could be problematic if the preamp or integrated you're using does not have balanced inputs. I think there's a very strong possibility that the balanced inputs on the Project will sound significantly better than the single ended inputs, particularly with a lower output cartridge.
Time has passed, and that interest is gone. Picking up an older used version without the built-in step-up transformers would be the way to go IMHO, and a lot cheaper.
Pablo After Michael Franks I was no nearer than I had been before, surly Ella would come to my rescue. Put the Album on using the Project and Ella stepped into my Living room and sang to me. At last a winner. I then played her through the EAR and Ella Stepped into my living room and sang to me. Back to my dilemma. How do I pick one of these fine Phono Stages. Time for one last album.
All of which I will be getting. I would just like to add, there is often the status appeal of owning a certain piece of gear.

I don't believe that the manual for the 834P is available in electronic form. The manual is a single cardstock sheet of A9 size that is printed on both sides. There isn't a lot of information on it, but if you would like I could make a photocopy of the one that I have here and mail it to you. You can contact me privately (info@audiointelligent.com) with your mailing address if you would like me to do this. I'm happy to help. Dealer disclaimer. Jim Pendleton Osage Audio Products, LLC.
I plan on doing more listening tonight and just playing the albums with good sound. I started getting the impression that the 834p paints a little broader picture than my other stages. A little bit more in the highs and lows come through with the music. To me it also seems to play at a higher volume than I would have expected.
The tubes at V1 & V2 have the same construction and are identical. I replaced these.
What I liked about the EAR. Well built Looks amazing Sounds Wonderful What I disliked about the EAR No options for changing loadings/gain Etc Expensive Comparing the two units.
To try the 5751 out without spending too much, look for the Philips JAN version, much cheaper but pretty good. Senior member Posts: 853 Images: Joined: 13 Mar 2008 12:04 Location: Kent, UK •. Hi all, I just got an Ear 834P. This is my first experience with tubes.
Once it is released I will definitly be buying it. Left the unit on over night last night so that it would be fully warmed up this morning. Albums used for evaluation were. Joe Sample - Carmel - Regular Pressing David Qualey - Soliloquy -Windham Hill Santana - Abraxas - Mobile Fidelity Limited Edition Intensive Care – Discwasher Analog Recording Pressed in Japan Carl Orff- Carmina Burana, Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra- Hi-Q Supercuts Protocol was the same as before first played the full album using the EAR and then replayed the same album using the Phono Box RS. Did this with each album. As I have fully talked about the RS I will talk only about the EAR and then give my conclusions and yes I have made a choice. So how did the EAR sound. In one word Wonderful.
Most people like the JJ tubes but some use whatever flavor suits them best. I have generally used the stock tubes in the 834P, but I am currently using RCA NOS tubes in both the line stage and phono stage of the 864 preamp I have here.

I just started leaving my other equipment on all the time but don't feel like that is a good idea with the 834p. Just a hunch. I'm getting back into vinyl and I never paid much attention to all this stuff when I was younger. Appreciate the help folks. Thanks for the replies guys.
Is this a 12AX7? Can I drop-in another 12AX7 TIA. Lito senior member Posts: 586 Images: Joined: 05 Jan 2005 18:40 Location: Makati, Phil. Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but you might try a set of 5751 valves. I've found them to work very well, better than Mullard ECC83 in the EAR phono stage. A military-spec valve, they are a drop-in replacement for the ECC83 but with less gain.
