One episode you'll be laughing your ass off, the next you're going to be crying from the unexpected romance/drama/tragedy. It's because the comedy makes you think that nothing bad can never happen. Then BAM, an arc kills off a beloved main character.

The original title of the series was meant to be ' Yorozuya Gin-' ( 万事屋銀さん, lit. 'Odd Jobs Gin-san'), but it did not have any impact on Sorachi. After great debate, he decided to go with the name Gin Tama after discussing it with his family, deciding on a name that sounded close to the edge without being completely off it. Although Sorachi considered the one-shot 'Samuraider' to be very poor, the setting of such one-shot served as the base for Gin Tama such as the addition of alien characters. Sorachi liked the and periods due to how both were eras of change and thus presented the positive and negative points of humanity. The series was then set in an alternate Bakumatsu to give a bigger significance to the characters' as in that time samurais were at the low point of their lives. The main character of the series was originally meant to be as Sorachi was a fan of the Shinsengumi, most notably from (the Shinsengumi who was the base for the one of Gin Tama), after he saw the film Burn!

This is one of the best explanation / setups for this anime series I've ever seen. I've been asked about it countless times by people who just couldn't figure out 'what' it was - and I am never exactly sure how to go about explaining to them, other than to say - if you watch it in it's entirety - and DON'T skip to just one aspect of it, it will likely be your favorite anime ever, as it is mine. If I hadn't watched Gintama, I don't think it would have broken me into all the genre's that I hadn't watched prior to this - I was strictly shounen/action anime.

Gintama is one of the most popular manga series in Japan with 50 million copies printed since it began in 2004. It has gained fame among fans online with its balance of humor, drama, and action while still jokingly referencing other popular Shonen Jump series like Dragon Ball. The series has seen different forms since its initial anime run from 2006 to 2010, with a second series airing from 2011 to 2013 with sporadic hiatuses in-between, a third series running from 2015 to 2016, two feature-length animated films, a few OVAs, and even a live action film releasing in Japan last July. Like the previous book, this one also has an interview with Sorachi and files for the new characters that have appeared in the series since the first guidebook's release. The first guidebook for the anime is named Gintama Official Animation Guide 'Gayagaya Box' ( オフィシャルアニメーションガイド 銀魂あにめガヤガヤ箱). It was published on April 4, 2008 to celebrate the airing of the anime's 100th episode.

Though the serious arcs are spread out, they all tie into the overarching plot of the entire series. Seeds of the end-game of Gintama (which is happening right now) start from the very first episode. You will not catch the subtle hints/foreshadowing without rewatching the series. Gintama at this point is in its final arc. The series right now is full of betrayal, death, violence, and tragedy. Treasure the happy comedy that is present at the beginning of the series.

That's why you can get emotionally invested in the story - and why you legitimately want to know of a character's past and the history between them. By far my favorite anime - and I'm a big anime enthusiast to be sure. Gintama started that enthusiasm. It wasn't my first - but I'd never have given other genre's like slice of life, a chance, if Gintama hadn't parodied them and incorporated them into it's structure. I'm re-watching the series as I type this;) I'm right around the Hosen arc - and I'm loving it as much as my first time.
