PageMaker lacks the slick wizards and step-by-step templates of Publisher. (Although PageMaker's newsletter templates are superior.) You need to dedicate training time to get the most out of this program. PageMaker made desktop publishing accessible early on, and that hasn't changed.

By Ben Kenobi PageMaker 7 is the best Desktop Publishing package ever created! I started working with Adobe PageMaker at version 4.5 and maintained a constant working presence for personal and sometimes professional purposes until 7.0 was released. It has never been an inexpensive piece of software, but I am now too old to spend the time necessary to jump in to InDesign or some other less than stellar tool, and since I want to start doing some publishing again, I have found that Nothing on the market now - compares to the simplicity and functionality of this old venerable piece of software that really does EXACTLY what it was designed to do without all the unnecessary and frivolous additions that its predecessor now contains. If need be, I will go buy an older Mac to use this software since everyone says this won't run on anything later than windows 2000. Adobe messed up and abandoned a nearly perfect product. I really wish these companies would learn that there are times when less is more.
However, [Basic Paragraph] and [No Paragraph Style] picks up the attributes of a named style if that style was selected before any typing occurred in the PageMaker publication. PageMaker may have started the whole desktop publishing deal 16 years ago, but it has long played second banana to high-end. It has also been thumped in the price wars by low-end competitors such as Microsoft Publisher. At $499, version 7.0 is still a tweener: too expensive for budget-conscious, home-based and small-business users and not powerful enough for professional designers. PageMaker 7.0, with new tools for turning documents into PDF files and churning out catalogs from data in spreadsheets and databases, is best suited for small to midsized businesses that want to distribute Acrobat Reader-formatted files, produce sophisticated catalogs, and work on the Mac as well as the PC.
When both Double-Sided and Facing Pages are selected, files are converted into facing-page spreads. Preferences Supported? Notes Snap to Constraints No -- Save Option (Smaller, Faster) No -- Horizontal and Vertical Nudge No -- Greek Text Below No -- PostScript Printing-Memory Freed for Graphics No -- Display PPD Name No -- Turn Pages When Autoflowing No -- TrueType Display (Preserve Line Spacing/ Character Shape) No -- Trapping Preferences Yes When Auto-overprint black strokes or fills (or both) are selected in the Trapping Preferences dialog box in PageMaker, the setting carries over to InDesign.
Version 7.0.1: • Merge text and graphics stored originally in spreadsheets or databases to create custom publications, including form letters, mailing labels, envelopes, catalogs, or direct mail campaigns. • Create and view Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
The interface is basically unchanged. Version 7.0 does provide compatibility with Windows 2000 and Me. It provides data-merge capacity, improved Portable Document Format (PDF) support, native support for Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files (except for programming transparencies), and also the capacity to convert Publisher 97 to 2000 and QuarkXPress 3.3 to 4.1 documents. The data-merge capacity enables you to create form letters and flyers by manually consolidating altering text (by way of instance, addresses) using a PageMaker document which includes a placeholder for text. The origin of the text could be a database or spreadsheet. The tools for producing PDF documents are useful for digital publishing, because this format is readable across several programs. Tagged PDFs empower small-screen devices like PDAs to exhibit your files.
Frankly, we prefer the easier point-and-click approach. Publish once PageMaker 7.0 may look like its predecessor, but there's new gear under the hood. One welcome change is the ability to output PageMaker publications in a special tagged PDF file that displays text and graphics in similar fashion on all sorts of hardware: PCs, Macs, PDAs, and even cell phones.

OLE Objects No InDesign doesn't support OLE. OLE objects drop out when you open PageMaker publications in InDesign, and any text wrap is lost. However, the bounding boxes of OLE objects convert. Embedded Graphics Yes -- Adobe Table 3.0 Objects Yes (Limited) PageMaker tables appear as graphics and are not editable in InDesign.
Hyphenation Yes (Limited) InDesign uses a different hyphenation method than PageMaker, so line breaks can be different. Fonts Yes (Limited) All fonts in a PageMaker publication should be active when the publication is opened in InDesign. InDesign can continue to list fonts as missing if they are activated after the PageMaker publication is opened.
The inclusion of Distiller 5 for creating PDF files is also welcome, as is tighter integration of the PDF tools with PageMaker's export interface. But PageMaker's most hyped new feature, the data-merge plug-in, is a huge disappointment. Although it lets you import graphics and text--to create mail-merged letters and simple catalogs from any comma-delimited text file--it's quirky and maddening to use. Creating a data form is simple: you select the data file from the plug-in's palette, and it reads the first row of data to determine the field names. A field name that begins with the @ character indicates the name of an image file to be imported.
Quark stated its intention to buy out Adobe and to divest the combined company of PageMaker to avoid anti-trust issues. Adobe rebuffed the offer and instead continued to work on a new page layout application code-named 'Shuksan' (later 'K2'), originally started by Aldus, openly planned and positioned as a 'Quark killer'. This was released as 1.0 in 1999. The last major release of PageMaker was 7.0 in 2001, after which the product was seen as 'languishing on life support'. Adobe ceased all development of PageMaker in 2004 and 'strongly encouraged' users to migrate to InDesign, initially through special 'InDesign PageMaker Edition' and 'PageMaker Plug-in' versions, which added PageMaker's data merge, bullet, and numbering features to InDesign, and provided PageMaker-oriented help topics, complimentary fonts, and templates. From 2005, these features were bundled into InDesign CS2, which was offered at half-price to existing PageMaker customers.

Creative audigy drivers windows 7. However, for most people desktop publishing has become obsolete, as word processing applications can now create pages for printing ideal for the amateur user, and professional design suites are much better suited for business. This is a perfectly viable publishing app, but it's relatively hard to learn, and out of date.
Master Page Items Yes Master pages in PageMaker convert to master pages in InDesign and retain all objects including page numbering and guides. Some layers could be added to the document. To retain the stacking order established in the original PageMaker publication. (See the Layers listing in this section.) Non-Printing Objects Yes All objects designated in PageMaker as Non-Printing are converted with Non-Printing selected in the InDesign Attribute palette. Ruler Guides Yes -- Table of Contents Yes Table of Contents text converts as a Table of Contents, with PageMaker TOC Style available in the style pop-up menu in the InDesign TOC dialog box.
Fill Patterns No Fill patterns applied from PageMaker's Fill menu become solid. Screen Patterns/Angles No InDesign doesn't support screen patterns or angles applied to TIFF images in Image Control; it drops them from imported TIFF files. Colorized TIFF Files Yes -- Photoshop Effects Yes -- Strokes Yes (Limited) InDesign supports only solid or dashed strokes. Other stroke variations (such as Reverse or strokes created with the Custom option) either unreverse or become solid strokes in InDesign. Hairlines become.25-point strokes. Keylines Yes (Limited) Keylines become grouped to the object to which they are applied.
If you change the original worksheet or database, you must reexport it as a comma-separated file. And since PageMaker's HTML export is so imprecise, you'd use Data Merge only for print catalogs. The whole process is crude: you can't skip a record on the fly but must instead specify records to include in a dialog just before you run the merge. Data Merge is better than creating a catalog from scratch when some of the data is already in digital format--we built a small parts catalog using Excel data without problems--but it's no panacea. Tweener publisher Adobe is trying to make PageMaker play better with other applications. Version 7.0 imports Microsoft Word documents (including those in Word 2000/2002 for Windows and 2001 for Mac) directly into publications, converts QuarkXPress 4.1 (Windows) and 4.0 (Mac) files, and translates Microsoft Publisher (but not Publisher 2002) files into PageMaker format. Our Publisher 2000 test newsletter made it to PageMaker in nearly pristine condition; all we had to do was reformat some text to make it fit.

Installing Adobe PageMaker Before you begin using Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book, make sure that your system is set up correctly and that you've installed the required software and hardware. You must purchase the Adobe PageMaker 7.0 software separately. You must install the application from the Adobe PageMaker 7.0 CD onto your hard disk; you cannot run the program from the CD. For system requirements and complete instructions on installing the software, see the How_to_Install.wri (Windows) or How_to_Install.txt (Mac OS) file on the application CD.
If your goal is to produce documents that look as though they were created in something more capable than a word processor but that don't require the high level of design that QuarkXPress and InDesign offer, PageMaker may be all you need--just beware the pitfalls of the new data-merge tool.
If need be, I will go buy an older Mac to use this software since everyone says this won't run on anything later than windows 2000. Adobe messed up and abandoned a nearly perfect product. I really wish these companies would learn that there are times when less is more. Pros: Simple and Easy to Learn. Desktop Book and Document Publishing focused design.
